Vietnam's agri exports rise 26% in Jan-Oct 2008

Vietnam’s exports of agricultural, forestry and seafood products saw an increase in value during the first ten months of the year, although October's total export value was down compared to last month, the country’s state news agency quoted the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as saying.

Vietnam has earned $13.6 billion from agricultural, forestry and seafood exports so far this year, an increase of 25.7 percent over last year.

The agricultural sector recorded exports exceeding $1 billion of seafood, rice, wooden products, coffee and rubber in the first ten months of the year. The biggest exports by value were seafood, talking 27 percent of total export value, rice with 20 percent, wooden products with 17 percent and coffee with 13 percent.

However, in October alone, the export value fell 7 percent to $1.4 billion compared with September, the ministry said.

The decline was due to falling prices of key agricultural products such as rice, coffee, cashew and rubber, said the ministry.
