Shrimp ponds expand tenfold in Mekong delta

Mekong delta provinces now has almost 5,000 ha of water surface for raising green-pincered shrimps, ten times over five years ago.

Most of those ponds are located in provinces along the Tien and Hau rivers like An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Ben Tre and Can Tho, which are trying to restructure their production structure to cope with annual floods on the Mekong river.

Ben Tre province has 2,400 ha of green-pincered shrimp farms, while Dong Thap has 1,500 ha, An Giang, 600 ha and Can Tho, 400 ha.

Local farmers usually raise green-pincered shrimp in combination with rice cultivation or in rotation with black shrimps.

The expansion of green-pincered shrimp raising attributed to stable supply of breeding shrimps, the availability of raising technique and high demand.

The Mekong delta is expected to become the countrys largest producer of green-pincered shrimps.
