THAILAND-US TIES/ MYANMAR ISSUE
Thai FM: Asean engagement the way to go

Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama, in a meeting with his US counterpart, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, on Thursday, said he disagreed with the US sanction against Myanmar. Rice, however, said the US would continue putting pressure on Myanmar.

Noppadon insisted that democracy in the neighbouring country could be restored through dialogue and engagement. As Thailand is assuming the Asean chairmanship this July, Noppadon pledged to employ Asean engagement to persuade the military junta to solve conflicts through reconciliatory methods, reported Thai News Agency.

During his visit to Washington to mark the 175th year of Thailand-US bilateral relations, Noppadon sought US assistance to help Thailand normalise relations with Saudi Arabia as the US enjoys close relationship with the Middle East country.

The Thai-Saudi relations have been strained for 19 years following the disappearance of gems smuggled into Thailand from Saudi Arabia by a Thai worker and unresolved murder cases of Saudi diplomats.
