Rice exports seen reaching 9 million tonnes

Thailand’s Commerce and Deputy Prime Minister Mingkwan Saengsuwan on Tuesday predicted that Thailand's exports of rice would reach more than 9 million tonnes this year.

He said overall rice prices remain sound at present, with farmers able to sell their crop at a high price.

However, Mingkwan conceded that rice output in some areas had overly high humidity due to the recent rainfall, forcing some farmers to sell to millers at discounted prices, adding that the government had purchased rice gradually from farmers to maintain the crop price.

There are eight countries which had placed orders for 6.7 million tonnes of rice from Thailand but the government could not disclose their names due to internal security of each country’s internal security concerns, he said.
