India to present sapling of holy Bodhi tree to Thailand

BANGKOK : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will present a sapling of the holy Bodhi Tree from Bodhgaya to Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej as a special gift during his visit to the country on May 30.
The tender sapling was flown in on Monday to this predominantly Buddhist nation, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
The Bodhi Tree at the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodhgaya in northern Indian state of Bihar is the exact place where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment 2,600 years ago and became the Lord Buddha.
The holy Bodhi Tree is revered by Buddhists who even worship its leaves.
The presentation of the sapling by the Indian premier is seen as a historic event representing shared cultural heritage of Thailand and India.
During his visit, Manmohan will also hold talks with Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.
Several memorandum of understandings are expected to be signed during the the Indian prime miniter's visit.
