Court lifts environmental block
The court approved the operating permits of 74 projects which were earlier suspended, revoked the permits of only two projects and required they produce new environmental and health assessment reports.
The research centre believed the court’s ruling was a positive sign and it would boost investment by 8.1-8.8 percent this year and about 7.5-9.3 percent next year.
Other factors, including capacity expansion in the country’s key industries, the government’s investment in infrastructure projects and the infrastructure investment projects in the private sector, would also boost investment growth in 2011, the centre noted.
Moreover, the strengthening yen encouraged Japanese to invest more in foreign countries. The government should take this opportunity to launch a campaign in Japan to encourage businesses there to make Thailand their production base.
Thai manufacturers should seize on the baht’s appreciation to import capital goods, including machinery, to improve their production efficiency, the centre recommended.
