Thailand considering boosting environmental investments
For example, Toshiba is investing in environment-friendly products in Asean, with Thailand among the candidates for the new investment.
It is now waiting for a clear direction from the Thai government over support for activities that contribute to the environment.
Deputy Industry Minister Buddhipong Punnakant yesterday said that, if approved, this would be the first time the BOI had specifically given incentives to companies or organisations contributing to society or the environment. The agency will seek the views of experts on how to proceed with such a move.
The ministry expects t BoI's board, chaired by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, to complete its consideration of the matter by early next year. If the board gives its approval, the new measure is likely to take immediate effect.
Toshiba chairman Atsutoshi Nishida, on a visit to Bangkok, yesterday said the deputy industry minister had told him about the new incentive, which is of interest for the Japanese giant's new investment in LED-lamp production.
The products cause far less carbon-dioxide emission than conventional lighting such as incandescent lamps.
He said Toshiba had combined corporate social responsibility (CSR) with its business activity, as the group's main principle is to grow sustainably and profitably along with contributing to society.
