Agri ministry mulls raising food exports

Thailand’s Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is considering proposing to the Cabinet a plan for Thai producers to ship more agricultural produce to world markets in response to growing global food requirements and collateral opportunities for Thai producers.

Thailand’s Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Somsak Prissananantakul said he would propose a "crop allocation zones" so that appropriate fertile land would be reserved for growing rice and other food products, alternative energy plants, animal husbandry and fisheries.

He plans to invite four other ministries - energy, industry, commerce, and science and technology - to cooperate on boosting Thai agricultural exports. Somsak said he would submit the proposal to the cabinet on Tuesday (April 22).

His comments came after UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said earlier this week that the global food crisis had reached emergency proportions and threatened to wipe out seven years of progress in the fight against global poverty.
