Bollywood kicks off IIFA 2008

Bangkok took its turn to host the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) which started the three-day awards weekend in the capital of Thailand Friday.

The highlights of the event that runs from June 6 through 8 include the IDEA IIFA Awards 2008 to be held at Siam Niramit, Bangkok, and attended by more than 500 stars, luminaries, movers and shakers from the world of Indian cinema.

In the spotlight are Indian film icon Amitabh Bachchan, the IIFA ambassador, his son Abhishek Bachchan and his daughter-in-law Miss World 1994 Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

To be premiered on the first day of the event is Sarkar Raj (Absolute Ruler),
the first movie Abhishek and Aishwarya play together since the couple were married. The film was screened to exclusive audiences at the Cannes festival last month.

Since it started nine years ago, the IIFAs have been to three continents and nine locations across the globe, reaching out to a worldwide audience through its various platforms, opening up new markets, and promoting bilateral trade and tie-ups with India.

In an interview with CNN-IBN's Rohit Khilnani in Bangkok, Amitabh Bachchan said: “What started off as another awards ceremony - basically to recognise Indian creative talent outside India - has now developed into a wonderful event where we share business ideas, we share common events to raise money for charity and we take up a common cause affecting the world, global warming. So all in all, it is very exciting.”

India’s leading stars and celebrities from its glittering movie industry are staying this weekend at Dusit Thani Bangkok, the official host hotel for the event.
