PTT to double LPG imports

Thai energy firm PTT Plc plans to import 200,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) this year, double its previous target, due to rising demand.

Demand for LPG, which is widely used as cooking gas and taxi fuel in Thailand, has risen about 10 percent annually in recent years, PTT Chief Executive Prasert Bunsumpun was quoted by Reuters as telling reporters.

The domestic price for LPG was fixed last year at 18.13 baht ($0.574) per kg and will remain at that price until July.

Thai LPG consumption was expected to rise 54 percent by 2012 to four million tonnes, from 2.6 million tonnes in 2001, PTT has said. ($1=31.57 baht)
