Asean Economic Community:
Thai entrepreneurs urged to improve product quality
Thailand’s trade negotiator unit on Monday urged entrepreneurs to rapidly improve product quality in preparation for the establishment of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) by 2015, when no trade barriers would be imposed, reported Thai News Agency (TNA).
TNA quoted Noppadol Saravasee, deputy director-general of the country’s International Trade Negotiation Department, as saying that Thailand has already prepared itself for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ plan to become an economic community in the next seven years.
Once the community is established, Noppadol said, the movement of intra-group trade, investment, services and labour would be liberalised, without any imposition of trade barriers among Asean’s member countries.
Therefore, Thailand’s industrialists must adjust to the changing environment since various product items could be imported without any tariffs when the community set up is complete and functioning.
In the future, he said, Asean would be become Thailand’s key export destination since it had a population of some 550 million now.
Given increased trade and investment with Asean, Noppadol said he believed Thailand will enjoy a continued trade surplus with the group.
He also revealed that the department also plans to accelerate giving entrepreneurs better understanding of the benefits and responsibilities of membership of the emerging economic community.
