LONG LIVE THE KING
A Tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand
It is a great honour for AseanAffairs to put together this special feature – a sincere tribute to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
We are delighted to have this opportunity to join Thais and all the well-wishers at home and abroad, in wishing His Majesty a happy 82nd birthday, and a long healthy life.
Thais and good friends of Thailand all share a common desire for His Majesty’s full recovery from his recent illness. To our immense relief and joy, our beloved monarch is now convalescing.
Blessed are all Thais to have a King of sincerity, compassion and plain common sense. AseanAffairs is among those keenly observing improvement in His Majesty’s health.
Anxious that we all had been for His Majesty’s health to improve, we were overwhelmed with gratefulness to witness our revered King coming out to meet his subjects as he paid respect to the late HRH Princess Mother and King Rama V in the hospital compound on October 23.
A few days later on November 2, we were again filled with delight and reassurance to see Their Majesties, along with the Royal Household, celebrating the Loy Krathong Festival, where His Majesty smiled and waved to all who came to greet him.
We know how dedicated His Majesty’s has been in serving his people but we were still pleasantly surprised by His Majesty’s unwavering conscience in taking his responsibility. Undergoing medical treatment would not stop His Majesty from doing what he always does – keeping an eye on his Kingdom and helping his people in times of trouble.
Let us give you a most recent example. It must have been the reports of severe flooding in the southernmost provinces that re-energised the spirit of our working King who was just recuperating. His Majesty was busy seeing to it that food and medical supplies were delivered fast to the victims while drawing an emergency plan to manage the flood waters. Studying aerial photographs of the flood-hit areas, His Majesty found that new roads were blocking the flow of water, causing floods.
Authorities were asked to put into action ‘Kam Ling’ (literally, ‘Monkey Cheek’, more about which can be found in an accompanying story in this section) water management system, a brainchild of His Majesty’s. One of the practical innovations of His Majesty, the Monkey Cheek system basically retains water in
It is a tremendous burden of responsibility to be a King as conscientious as His Majesty is. In return for his hard work, His Majesty has earned the caring love and concern of Thais, and respect and admiration of nations around the world.
Indeed, Thailand has been greatly blessed to have such a King. May His Majesty enjoy enduring good health; May His Majesty have all the help and cooperation from all his subjects in his work for the Kingdom; and LONG MAY HE REIGN.
