Singapore said that visitor arrivals fell 13.2 percent in March from a year ago as the global economic downturn hits travel, AFP reported.

The city-state welcomed 790,000 people last month, down 121,000 from March 2008, the Singapore Tourism Board said.

Hotel room revenue was also hit, declining 33.3 percent to 125 million Singapore dollars (83.3 million US) year on year, it said.

Singapore drew 10.1 million visitors in 2008, falling short of its target of 10.8 million as travel slowed noticeably in the second-half in the face of the global downturn.

Tourism is a major revenue earner for Singapore, which is expected to post its worst recession in more than 40 years this year.
