A new bus depot will be built off Jurong West Avenue 2 and completed by 2015.
SINGAPORE: A new bus depot will be built off Jurong West Avenue 2, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) revealed Tuesday.
The bus depot is scheduled to be completed by 2015.
LTA said the bus depot, which will be named Wenya Bus Depot, will accommodate about 500 SMRT buses. The buses will be brought in over the next few years.
LTA said SMRT's existing bus depots and bus parks are reaching full capacity.
It added that the new facility is necessary to support the higher number of buses as the country's overall bus capacity is progressively increased under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).
The bus depot will be equipped with facilities for daily bus operations, bus repair and maintenance, as well as a rest area for bus drivers.
This will be the first deport that LTA is developing and funding, as part of a review of the enhanced structural assistance that the government is providing the bus industry.
A tender has been called for contractors to submit cost proposals for the new bus depot.
