According to GFK information, in 2013 Thai Smartphone market will expand by 37% with 7.8 million units of sales, totaling market value of 54,000 million Baht.  As of first half of 2013, however, Smartphones sales in Thailand reached 4 million units, or a 39% growth, compared with expected 37%.  The higher than expected growth is driven by wider coverage of 3G service by the Operators leading to significant increase of data service.  Sony believes that Smartphone market for the second half of the year will continue to grow even higher than the first half, following substantial launch of new Smart phones from manufacturers and the high season for Smartphone product group experiencing heavy purchase by consumers.”

It is commonplace in journalism to write two types of articles at the transition point between the year that has passed and the New Year. As this writer qualifies as an “old hand” in observing Thailand with a track record dating back 14 years, it is time take a shot at what may unfold in Thailand in 2011.
