Dr Christopher Wooldridge BSc PhD FRICS FRGS FHEA MIMarEST to chair GreenPort South Asia Conference

The first GreenPort South Asia Conference, which takes place in Mumbai, India on 20-22 March 2013 has provoked wide spread interest from professionals from across the region, with the following companies, amongst others, already confirming their participation:  Adani Ports, Dighi Ports, Gujarat Maritime Board, TATA Consulting, Mundra Ports, JNPT, CMA CGM, Bintulu Port Authority, Nigerian Ports Authority, Ennore Port Authority, Vizag Coal Port, Vishinjam International Seaport.

The organisers are also pleased to confirm that Chris Wooldridge, a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, Cardiff University, UK and Principal of Maritime Education and Survey Projects (MESP, Swansea, UK), will chair the two day conference. “The location of GreenPort 2013 in India is highly significant in terms of seaborne trade routes, regional sea management, and the potential to develop further networks for mutual collaboration between players in the logistic chain. As Chairman I recognize the wealth of talent and experience brought to the conference by the wide range of speakers and delegates – I look forward to harnessing the insights, recommendations and opinions during the planned, interactive sessions” commented Dr Wooldridge.  Chris brings with him a wealth of experience as he has worked on Research and Development with the port sector since 1982 specialising in hydrography and the environmental management of port and harbour operations. His current research activities include Marine Renewable Energy from tidal turbines, the identification of Environmental Performance Indicators (EPIs) for the port sector, Environmental Management Tools specifically for small ports, and Environmental Management of the Logistic Chain.  Chris has recently joined ECO-Sustainable Logistic Chain (Amsterdam) as Science Coordinator and is a strong believer in multi-disciplinary, applied research and recognizes the benefits of close collaboration between industry, academia and other marine professionals.

This year in Thailand-what next?

It is commonplace in journalism to write two types of articles at the transition point between the year that has passed and the New Year. As this writer qualifies as an “old hand” in observing Thailand with a track record dating back 14 years, it is time take a shot at what may unfold in Thailand in 2011.

The first issue that can’t be answered is the health of Thailand’s beloved King Bhumibol, who is now 83 years old. He is the world's longest reigning monarch, but elaborate birthday celebrations in December failed to mask concern over his health. More
