Indonesia Presidential Elections:
Polls set for July and September, 2009

Indonesia's General Elections Commission on Thursday set the dates for the two-round presidential election that will take place in the second half of this year, reported Kyodo news.

The commission's plenary session decided that the first round of the election will be held on July 8, while its runoff -- contested by the two candidates who gain most votes in the first round -- will be on September 8.

The presidential election will follow the parliamentary election slated for April 9. Recent polls show that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is seeking a second term, and his predecessor Megawati Sukarnoputri, who will run again, are the strongest candidates.

In the 2004 presidential election, Yudhoyono, then Megawati's coordinating minister for political and security affairs, won over Megawati with 60.62 per cent of the vote in a runoff.
