Construction of Mindanao Railway to start Q2 2018
Construction of the Mindanao Railway will begin in the second quarter of 2018, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Monday.
"Second quarter of 2018," Transportation Undersecretary for Rails Cesar B. Chavez said when asked for a timeline on the start of the construction of the Mindanao Railway.
"First quarter of 2018, bili na kami ng lupa ... In fact, sa second quarter palang, pwede na naming i-bid out kasi may pondo na kami," he added.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia said last year the 2,000-kilometer project was likely to begin construction in 2017.
The railway will connect major cities such as Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Butuan, Surigao, Davao and General Santos.
The proposal for the first phase was approved by the National Economic and Development Authority Board last month.
Estimated to cost P35.26 billion, the first phase involves the establishment of a 102.28-kilometer commuter railway from Tagum City in Davao del Norte to Digos City in Davao del Sur.
"This is GAA (General Appropriations Act), this is not ODA (Official Development Assistance)," Chavez said.
In 2016, President Rodrigo R. Duterte revealed he was eyeing a new railway system as his "first big project." — VDS, GMA News
