Philippines, Vietnam sign treaties
President Benigno Aquino 3rd and Vietnam President Truong Tan Sang on Wednesday evening signed four bilateral agreements that will promote tourism and mutual cooperation in the navies and coast guards of both countries.
President Aquino said that the agreements included an action plan from 2011 to 2016 wherein 13 general areas of cooperation were outlined, namely political, defense and security, economic, maritime and ocean issues, agriculture, fisheries and forestry, environment and climate change, energy security, tourism, health, education and culture, science and technology, social welfare and development and regional and international cooperation.
The maritime and ocean agreement is significant as both countries have crossed swords with China over territorial rights in the South China Sea (as China calls it) or the Philippines West Sea (as the Philippines calls it) or the East Sea, the moniker that Vietnam uses.
