Philippines’ ousted president to run for 2010 elections
Former Philippine president Joseph Estrada formally announced his candidacy for the 2010 elections on Wednesday, Channel News Asia reported. He will be running on a pro-poor ticket with Jejomar Binay as his running mate.
Estrada was ousted from office in 2001, amidst allegations of wide-spread corruption. He was later convicted but pardoned by current president Gloria Arroyo.
In one of the country's poorest districts of Tondo and in the company of his urban poor supporters and loyal fans, the former actor vowed to continue with his pro-poor programmes.
The question on everyone's mind is whether Estrada can still run for president in 2010. His formal declaration is likely to trigger a constitutional debate that may reach the Supreme Court.
The Commission on Elections will also have to rule whether Estrada can really run for president in 2010, once he files his certificate of candidacy in the latter part of November.
