Unilever records high Thai growth
Thailand accounts for about one-fifth of Unilever's Southeast Asian food service business. ''Thailand is now a strategic country for Unilever and we expect to double our food business volume over the next five years,'' said Leo Oosterveer, executive vice-president of Unilever Food Solutions.
Unilever's food service business in Southeast Asia is worth approximately 20 billion euros (798 billion baht). Of the total, about one-fifth or 3.9 billion euros come from Thailand. The company sees a huge market potential for Thailand because it is one of the top four fastest-growing food service markets in Southeast Asia along with Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam.
The country's gross domestic product growth in 2010 is expected to be about 7.5 percent. Additionally, the value of out-of-home food consumption in 2009 was 195 billion baht. Unilever Food Solutions controls 5 percent of the out-of-home food consumption market but aims to lift its share to 10 percent in the future.
Unilever Food Solutions provides bouillon, seasoning, sauces, soups, dressing, and tea to independent restaurants, hotel chains and catering operators. Its famous brands include Knorr, Lipton and Best Foods.
There are about 250,000 restaurants and 210,000 food hawkers across the country. Unilever only covers 30 percent of that market but aims to increase it to 60 percent over the next five years by better cooperation with current customers to broaden its product lines to new customer groups.
It also launched a new global campaign to ensure chefs and restaurant operators that its foods are healthy and nutritious.
He said food service market demand continues to increase in this region. The number of people dining outside their home at least once a year is estimated at around 500 million in Southeast Asia.
