Vietnam: Vehicle sales lowest in August
Vietnam in August posted its lowest monthly sales of locally assembled cars since the beginning of this year, AFP quoted a trade body as saying Tuesday.

According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers' Association (VAMA), its 16 member companies sold only 7,809 units in August, a seven percent decrease versus July and the lowest monthly sales in 2008.

The association did not explain why the sales decreased for the month.

But the authorities have advised local residents to travel more by bus and reduce spending on luxury items like cars to curb traffic jams and double-digit inflation, which soared to an annual rate of 28.3 percent in August.

Between January and August, a total of 84,876 cars, trucks and buses were sold. The figure for the same period last year was 41,554.

Japan's Toyota topped the list, selling 17,430 vehicles in the eight-month period this year. Vietnam-owned Vinamotor and Truong Hai were next, with 16,951 and 12,950 units respectively, VAMA
said in a statement.
