Second Thai-Malaysia Bridge in Jeli Opens Friday

The RM9.2 million (US$2.77 million) second Thai-Malaysia Bukit Bunga bridge linking Narathiwat and east coast Kelantan-state will be officially opened by Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and his Thai counterpart, General Surayud Chulanot, on Friday.

Situated in Bukit Bunga in Jeli on the Malaysian side and Ban-Buke-Ta on the Thai side, the 120m bridge is the only structure to cross over Sungai Golok, the popular border town which is only passable by foot during the dry season.

The Bukit Bunga bridge would enhance the transport network between both countries and at the same time encourage cross-border economic activities and support the Bukit Bunga area as a growth centre, the East Coast Economic Region (ECER) secretariat said in a statement today.

The single carriage-way bridge took a year to complete.
