House debate on presidential election

Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) will discuss the bill on presidential and vice presidential elections only after the House`s recess period, or not earlier than May 2008, national news agency Antara quoted the bill`s drafting committee as saying Friday.

Agus Purnomo, member of the drafting committee, said that the articles on the nomination of candidates, the dispute on the results of election and campaign funds may be debated toughly.

With regard to the requirements for candidates, PKS would propose that the House should maintain the article on presidential/vice presidential candidates` requirements as contained in the revised Law No.23 /2003 on presidential and vice presidential elections.

One article calls for presidential and vice presidential candidates to be nominated by political parties or a coalition of political parties which win at least 15 percent of the parliamentary seats or 20 percent of the votes in legislative elections.
