Yamaha set to overtake Honda

PT Yamaha Motor Kencana Indonesia (YMKI) said it is set to pull ahead of Honda for the first time in competition in motorcycle market in Indonesia this year.

Last year, Honda still led with sales of 2.1 million units followed by Yamaha with sales of 1.8 million units and Suzuki with sales of 637,000 units.

Yamaha sales, however, shot up 28 per cent from 1.4 million units in the previous year as against Honda falling 9.5 per cent and Suzuki rising only by 12.1 per cent.

YMKI has invested US$40 million to expand its capacity from 1.8 million units to 2.4 million units, its general manager Bambang Asmarabudi said.

With the capacity YMKI hopes to increase its market share from 39 per cent in 2007 to 42 per cent this year, Bambang said, adding Yamaha has become a trend setter.

He predicted that motorcycle sales in the country will rise 15 per cent to 5.2 million units this year.
