Steel output forecast to decline

Indonesia's production of four types of steel products is estimated to decline by 0.6% - 21.2% in 2007 compared with last year.

The country's production of light iron profile is forecast to fall by 4.4% to 1.744 million tons, hot rolled coil (HRC) by 0.06% to 1.657 million tons, steel plate by 14.5% to 729,673 tons and steel pipes by 21.2% to 642832 tons.

Steel makers attributed the decline to large imports of cheap steel products from China causing problems for the domestic industry.

The country recently imposed anti-dumping import duties on steel suppliers from four countries, including China.

An increase, however, is predicted for slab production from 1.29 million tons to 1.34 million tons and production of steel wire from 834.070 tons to 919,562 tons.
