Toyota keeps market leadership

Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corp retained its lead in the Indonesian markets with first quarter sales surging 48 percent year-on-year.

Toyota's sales jumped to 45,058 units from 30,447 units in the same quarter last year, according to the Indonesian Automotive Industries' Association (Gaikindo) data.

Fellow Japanese manufacturer Mitsubishi was a distant second with 19,878 units, surpassing Suzuki which ranked third with 18,706 units.

Toyota's sister company Daihatsu fell by one spot to fourth with 15,032 units, and Honda, Nissan, Isuzu and bus and truck producer Hino followed with 12,789 units, 7,331 units, 6,000 units and 3,053 units, respectively.

Over the period, overall new motor vehicle sales in the country jumped by 60.8 percent supported by the stable bank interest rate, the association said.

Sales surged to 135,598 units from 84,337 units last year, but monthly sales in March fell slightly to 46,714 units from 47,503 units a month earlier.
