Indonesia sees stronger economic, trade, tourism ties

As economic and trade ties between Singapore and Indonesia keep growing, Indonesian envoy to the city state is upbeat that they could be strengthened further.

In terms of exports, Singapore is the third biggest destination after Japan and the United States. Indonesia’s exports to Singapore reached more than 9 billion Singapore dollars in 2007, according to Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore Wardana.who quoted data from the Central Bureau of Statistics.

In terms of foreign investment in Indonesia, Singapore ranked first as its 2007 investment reached $3.7 billion in 124 projects, followed by the UK ($1.5 billion) and Japan ($540 million), he noted.

In the tourism sector, Singapore consistently ranked first in the past several years in terms of the number of tourists visiting Indonesia. There were about five million foreign visitors to Indonesia last year, including 1.4 million vacationers from the island republic, or 26 percent of the total number of holiday makers to this world biggest archipelagic country, the ambassador said.

The potential is high and therefore Indonesia is making efforts to further promote tourism industry in addition to economic cooperation with Singapore.

On July 26 and 27, 2008, the Indonesian embassy will launch an Enchanting Indonesia programme to promote its culture and tourism in front of the Takasimaya shopping centre on Orchird Road.
