Glittering ‘Bersanding’ ceremony for Royal couple
The bersanding (sitting-in-state) ceremony of the Sultan of Brunei's
fourth princess, Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Majeedah Nuurul
Bulqiah and Pengiran Khairul Khalil Pengiran Syed Jaafari, was held with
pomp and pageantry according to Brunei royal custom in Bandar Seri
Begawan, Brunei’s capital.
The ceremony began at the Balai Singgahsana Indera Buana at Istana Nurul
Iman shortly after the arrival of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his
consorts, Paduka Seri Baginda Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha and
Pengiran Isteri Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim Mazhar.
After they took their places, four men called "Awang Awang" lit four
special candles in front of the bridal dais. This was followed by two more
Awang Awang who brought a golden ornament called "Kasur Namat" which was
placed between the candles.
Brunei's head of protocol, Pengiran Lela Cheteria Najabah, Pengiran Anak
Haji Abdul Aziz then informed the Sultan that the preparations were
complete and the ceremony could begin.
Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah then asked that Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah
Majeedah Nuurul Bulqiah be brought into the Balai Singgahsana Indera
Buana. Holding a bouquet of diamond-studded flowers, the princess, who
looked resplendent in a traditional Brunei attire, was brought into the
ceremonial hall accompanied by members of the royal family.
She was followed by Pengiran Khairul Khalil who was accompanied by Pehin
Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia, Ustaz Awang Abdul Aziz. Sultan
Hassanal Bolkiah then placed the groom's right hand on the head of the
princess as a 17-gun salute boomed in the distance.
The bersanding started with the recital of the salawat (praises to Prophet
Muhammad) and ended with the doa selamat (thanksgiving prayer) led by the
Mufti of Brunei.
About 5,000 guests comprising Brunei royalty and dignitaries, including
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and wife Datin Seri
Rosmah Mansor and members of the foreign diplomatic corps based here,
witnessed the ceremony.
The bridal couple, accompanied by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and his consorts
and some 700 people from the palace, then rode in a motorcade around the
city as thousands of people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the
newlyweds. Their marriage was solemnised on Thursday.
