Environment:Govt allocates 2 trillion rupiah to deal with climate changes
The government plans to set aside Rp2 trillion to upgrade capacity building of public next year in dealing with the expected extreme weather changes due to the global warming, reported a local daily.

The proposed expenditures for mitigation and adaptation programmes on climate change in the 2009 state budget would be about five times higher than the 391 billion rupiah ($42.6 million) planned for the state ministry of environment.

“I am very happy and feel honoured for the government’s appreciation by allocating such special budget for the climate change’s mitigation and adaptation,” Minister Rachmat Witoelar told The Jakarta Post over the weekend.

He said that the climate change budget would go to the National Climate Change Council before being distributed to the related executing agencies both in Jakarta and local areas.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono chairs the council with Rachmat in his personal capacity was named as executive chairman.

Sixteen cabinet ministers are members to the council with the main tasks among others, to formulate national policies, strategies and projects in dealing with climate change and to strengthen Indonesia’s position to push the rich nations to take responsible in controlling the climate change.
