Singapore hopes Fukuda will boost ties
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong expressed hope Wednesday that Japan will be more deeply engaged with Southeast Asia under the leadership of Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.
"I am confident that under your leadership, our bilateral relations and Japan's engagement with the region will be further enhanced," Lee said in a letter to Fukuda dated Wednesday.
"As the current ASEAN chair, Singapore looks forward to working with Japan to building more cohesive and vibrant ASEAN-Japan relations," Lee said in the letter, a copy of which was released to the media.
Lee observed that Japan is already enjoying close ties with the region, "guided by the Fukuda doctrine."
The doctrine was initiated and declared in Manila in 1977 by his late father and Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda, which laid the ground for the close relations between Japan and the region.
