Section of 3-nation highway in Myanmar completed
One of the sections of a highway in Myanmar which will link India and Thailand through the country under the Mekong-Ganga cooperation programme has been completed, local press reported August 8.

The completed 18-km section, which connects Myawaddy with the Tanintharyi mountain range, constitutes part of the trilateral highway extending as Moreh (India)-Tamu-Bagan-Myawaddy (Myanmar)- Maesot (Thailand), the Weekly Eleven News reported.

The 1,400-km trilateral highway network, agreed by the three countries in 2002, was aimed at promoting transport linkage among them with a view to expanding trade, investment, tourism, human resources development and people-to-people contact and economic and trade cooperation, personnel and cultural exchange and furthering development of South Asia and Southeast Asian region.

The highway will have two lanes with most of its sections now being single ones to be added. Besides, some parts of the existing roads, which are narrow, will be widened to seven meters.

The estimated fund of US%800 million for the highway project was reportedly to be provided by the governments of India and Thailand which includes India's commitment for establishing an optical fiber telecommunication network along the highway.

The progress of the trilateral highway project was discussed at the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of Mekong-Ganga Cooperation on the sidelines of the 40th Ministerial Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in Manila early this month.

Meanwhile, a deep-sea port at Dawei, Myanmar's southern Tanintharyi division, and the Dawei-Kachanaburi road link were reportedly to be carried out in one package together with the trilateral highway project.  Xinhua
