ASEAN youth to meet in Bali
Around 70 youths from Southeast Asian nations will gather in Kuta, Bali, this week to discuss problems affecting the region, Jakarta Post reported August 6.

Young men and women aged between 17 and 25 from the 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) will participate in ASEAN's "Bridge of Youth", to be held from Augugust 5 to 7.

"The purpose of gathering these people is to build youth awareness of the problems the region is facing," committee head Inayah Wulandari said.

The ASEAN region currently faces problems such as poverty, the high cost of education and violations of human rights. Inayah said youth -- as the leaders of the future -- should be involved in analyzing and solving these problems.

Inayah said the participants were selected from applications and essays sent to the committee in which the participants were asked to present their ideas for the event. Inayah said that the selected participants had demonstrated visionary potential

Youth and Sports Minister Adhyaksa Dault is scheduled to open the event. Participants will also plant around 500 mangrove trees at Serangan Island. Copyright 2007 The Jakarta Post
