HK businessmen at VN investment conference
More than 200 Hong Kong businessmen attended a conference in Hong Kong on August 7 that focused on Vietnam's investment environment.

Addressing the conference, entitled "Vietnam: A star in Southeast Asia", Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) Vice President Doan Duy Khuong stressed the advantages that Vietnam now has after the country joined the World Trade Organisation, particularly the construction of a new legal framework aimed at creating fairer conditions for foreign investment in the country.

As a result, he said, foreign investment in Vietnam over the first six months of 2007 surpassed the US$10 billion mark, a year-on-year increase of 60 per cent, said Khuong.

Talking with a Vietnam News Agency reporter on the sidelines of the conference, Anthony Lam, Regional Director of Hong Kong-based International Gold Resources Development Company, said the time is right for investment in Vietnam.

He said his company is involved in bridge and road construction and rice processing in Vietnam and plans to increase the company's capital fourfold in the budding Asian tiger.

The conference was jointly hosted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC), the VCCI and the Vietnamese General Consulate in Hong Kong.

Earlier the same day, the TDC and VCCI signed a Memorandum of Understanding on economic and commercial cooperation. VNA
