Stage is set for 5th Bangkok Film Festival
At the recent press conference to announce the upcoming festival were Mr Surapol Sawetseranee, deputy governor for marketing communications, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Mr. Chaiwat Thaweewongsangthong, president of the Association of Thai Film Federations, Mr. Suvit Thongrompo, managing director, SF Cinema City Co.Ltd., and Miss Wallaya Chiratiwat, executive vice president-business development and construction management, Central Pattana Public Company Limited.
The core organisers of this year’s event include a team from the Tourism Authority of Thailand and the Thai Film Foundation, whose expertise was clearly seen during the Thai short film Festival and whose contribution has helped to bring this special event to fruition each year.
This year’s emphasis will be on films from emerging industries from countries such as Sri Lanka, Portugal, Poland, Peru, Canada, Greece, etc. as well as films from ASEAN countries and Thai films which have been screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Moreover, special tributes will be paid, through various exciting programs, to outstanding genres and film personalities, such as the Spanish legendary filmmaker Luis Bunuel and the Greek cinematography.
The strength of this year’s screenings lies in the fact that the films will be shown at SF World Cinema on the 7th Floor of the CentralWorld Shopping Complex. Firstly, it is in a prime and convenient location right in the heart of Bangkok. Secondly, the unparalleled picture and sound quality of this first-class theater will surely enhance the appreciation of the films. Therefore, the ticket prices would be good value for money and there will be student discounts as well.
Special privilege for those with invitation cards, receive discounts on participating restaurants within CentralWorld. Plus, spend at least 1,500 baht at participating restaurants within the same day and receive 2 complimentary movie tickets to the Bangkok International Film Festival 2007.
Other highlights of the event worth mentioning include a series of seminars and workshops and the Bangkok Film Market, which is trade show for film buyers and sellers to be held by the Association of Thai Film Federations on July 23-25, 2007.
The glamour part of the festival is the Golden Kinnaree Award presented to the best film in the festival as selected by a respected panel of international jurors. Two other awards will be the Jameson Short Film Award and the ASEAN Film Award given to the best film from the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
The idea behind the Bangkok International Film Festival stems from the recognition of film-making as a form of cultural and artistic expression, which should be celebrated and appreciated. The festival also serves to present Thai films and resources to the rest of the world, thereby proving that Thailand has a capacity to emerge in the international film business scene as well as to be an excellent shooting and production location for filmmakers.
The 5th Bangkok International Film Festival will be held on July 19-29, 2007 at SF World Cinema on the 7th Floor of the CentralWorld Shopping Complex.
