Indonesia, China confirm cooperation in agriculture
The Indonesian and Chinese government have confirmed cooperation in agriculture, especially in the development hybrid rice, horticultural products, and in research and development of farm produce.

Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono said in Jakarta on Tuesday, that during his recent state visit to China, Vice President Jusuf Kalla in the company of the agriculture minister, the host offered technological assistance to the Indonesian government to help it achieve food self-sufficiency, including the development of hybrid rice.

"The vice president has asked me to follow up on the offer, for which I will take the necessary concrete measures in the integrated and sustainable development of hybrid rice," he said.

Besides, the agriculture minister has also told the Head of the Rice Research Institute to study more technical ways of technology transfer, exchange of experts, and the training and higher education of young personnel.

He also said that he has received the support and active role of the agribusiness players of the two countries to support the Indonesian government`s policy of reaching a rice production target of two million tons in 2007, and a five percent increase each year.

On the occasion, he added, a cooperation in the building of an Integrated Hybrid Center had been signed by PT Penta Prima Pusaka and Sinchuan Guohao Seeds Industry, as well as a cooperation between PT Guohao Penta Prima and the Agriculture Ministry`s Rice Research Institute in the development of pest-resistent hybrid rice, especially in overcoming various unfavorable agricultural conditions in the tropics, such as floods and drought, as well as in the development of various types of national superior hybrid rice seeds, and exchange of experts.

In 2005, a cooperation between Indonesia and China in the development of hybrid rice seeds had also been established between PT Sumber Alam Sutera (PT SAS) and Gua Hao Seed Industry. The cooperation had produced the Bernas variety of hybrid rice seeds in Lampung province at a rate of 10 tons per hectare, and also a new variety called Bernas Rokan hybrid rice seeds, under a cooperation between PT SAS and the Rice Crop Research Center.

A cooperation will also be established some time in the future in the development of pest-resistant hybrid rice for tropical regions, he said. Antara
