Myanmar released 29 political prisoners before power transfer YANGON: The Myanmar government under outgoing President Thein Sein freed on Friday (Jan 22) 29 political prisoners across the country, 18 of them from the notorious Insein Prison in the capital Yangon. Since President's Thein Sein's administration came into power in 2011, they have released a total of 1,183 political prisoners, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP). Friday's releases have brought the total number up to 1,212. Friday's release comes days before Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) is due to form the government following its landslide victory in the Nov 8 election and an appeal by the United States to release political prisoners. However, the well-known Saffron Revolution leader, Gambira, remains behind bars. He was arrested earlier this week over immigration charges, following an accusation by authorities that he had crossed the Thai border illegally. Suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Gambira is on constant medication., prompting foreign organisations such as Amnesty International to call for his immediate release.
