Myanmar opposition party dissolution due today

Bangkok, June 11 - Refugees from Myanmar would return home if the upcoming election in the military-ruled country is not fair, Eric Schwartz, a senior U.S. State Department official said Thursday.

Schwartz said the junta's repression of political foes and restrictions on the electoral process suggest Myanmar's election will lack international legitimacy.

This means little change in political conditions and would "not alter the need of Burmese who fear persecution to have access to protection outside of Burma," he said.

The governing military dictatorship has effectively ruled out the main opposition party from the upcoming election, the National League for Democracy party of Aung San Suu Kyi.
