New rural policy to raise income
Its minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, said the new rural development policy would focus on economic activities which could provide high income for rural residents.
"The current approach relies too much on oil palm and rubber planting. Through the new approach, we will develop abandoned areas," he told reporters after a Hari Raya celebration hosted by the Kedah Regional Development Authority (Keda) at Dataran Keda here Monday.
He said that under the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP), the ministry's focus would be on economic development to provide employment opportunities for rural residents as well as for them to increase their income.
"We don't want to only build roads, lamps and houses. Most important, we have to ensure economic activities for the rural folks to increase their income," he added.
Mohd Shafie also said he was confident that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak would continue to focus on rural development in the Budget 2011 to ensure the rural areas would not be left out in the country's development.
On Keda, he said the ministry would ensure the agency would receive the necessary allocation to continue with its rural development programmes under the 10MP.
