New launches boost car sales in January

Vehicle sales in Malaysian surged 31 percent in January 2008 from a year earlier, driven by improved consumer confidence, new model launches and the pre-Chinese New Year rush, according to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

The industry club 45,828 units were sold during the month compared with 35,047 units in the same month last year, it said in a report on Wednesday. Of the total, 42,267 units were passenger cars while the remaining 3,561 units were commercial vehicles.

The auto sector produced a total of 46,467 units in January this year, up from 29,180 units in the same month in 2007. Of this, 43,160 units were passengers cars, and the rest were commercial vehicles.

The MAA expects car sales to slow in February this year from a month earlier because of a shorter working period. But sales in February this year should be higher than 31,284 units for the same month in 2007, it said.
