Cabinet agrees to ratify Asean Charter

The Cabinet has agreed for Malaysia to ratify the Charter of the Asssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).

A Foreign Ministry statement says that pursuant to the Cabinet decision on Feb 13, Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar signed the instrument of ratification of the Asean Charter on behalf of the Malaysian government.

"The instrument of ratification will be deposited with the secretary-general of Asean soon," the statement adds.

The Asean Charter was signed by the Heads of State/Government of the 10-member Asean countries on Nov 20 last year.

Prime Minister Adullah Ahmad Badawi signed the charter on behalf of Malaysia at the 2007 Asean Summit in Singapore.

The charter will give the regional grouping a legal identity and turn it into a more effective and cohesive organisation after more than four decades in existence.

Its principles include enhanced consultation on matters affecting the common interests of Asean, which is one of the most respected regional groupings in the world.
