KAI to finish work on improvements in June

State-owned rail company PT KAI says it will finish its renovation work, procurement of new trains and system improvements in Greater Jakarta by June.

"We have so far renovated 80 percent of all 63 train stations in Greater Jakarta and have activated an e-ticketing system in Duri and Kota railway stations, both in West Jakarta," director for safety and security Bambang Irawan said on Friday.

The work, he said, included the construction of parking areas and demolition of 3,259 kiosks illegally occupying areas in 47 stations in Greater Jakarta that belonged to the company.

KAI head of Greater Jakarta operations, Bambang Eko Martono, said the company would compensate vendors' losses if the kiosks they had "rented" were yet to expire by the time of the demolition.
