Indonesia examines tourism

The eruption of Mt. Merapi near Yogyakarta, the earthquake and its subsequent tsunami in Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra , will affect tourism in Indonesia, a tourism worker said.

"It will surely affect Indonesian tourism, particularly the disaster which hit Mentawai because Mentawai is a tourist resort island," Yorrys Raweyai, chairman of the Federation of the Indonesian Tourism Workers Unions (FSPPI), said here on Friday.

He said that the eruption of Mt Merapi in Sleman, Yogyakarta, would also affect tourism. He said that Indonesia needed to recover its tourism with the help of all people so that the country`s tourism would return to normal.

Yorrys said his side would wait for the government`s follow-up steps after the disasters in carrying out the emergency response, recovery and reconstruction.

"We would like to see first how the emergency response, recovery and reconsruction are handled. We will take stock of all problems facing the tourism sector because this is a comprehensive program," he said.
