Batam prepares 31 tourism events in 2015

Indonesia:Batam city tourism office, collaborating with the central government, Riau Islands provincial government and the private sector, has prepared 31 tourism events throughout this year in order to attract more foreign travelers to the city.

Office head Yusfa Hendri said the first event, the Regatta Strait Yacht, a yacht race that would be participated in by dozens of sailors from Asia Pacific and Europe, would be held at the end of January. On Feb. 14 and 15, a similar event will be held in Batam, the Neptune Regatta.

“We also have the Tour de Barelang and Tour de Kepri [bike races], Barclay Charity, Kenduri Seni Melayu [Malay art performances], Musik Perbatasan [border area music] and many more events,” Yusfa said on Tuesday in Batam as quoted by kompas.com.

He said that Tourism Minister Arief Yahya had challenged him to attract 1.65 million foreign tourists to Batam this year. “Border areas like Batam are important spots to help support the nation’s tourism sector. Border areas can help contribute to foreign tourist arrivals,” he added.
