Fashion can drive of RI's economy: Minister

Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu says that the government is optimistic that the Indonesian fashion industry will be able to drive the country's economy.

"The economic value of the fashion industry in Indonesia has reached US$1.8 billion," Mari said in Jakarta on the sidelines of a Muslim wear fashion show as quoted by Antara news agency on Thursday.

Last year, this sector grew by around 6.4 percent and the figure was projected to increase by up to 8 percent this year, she said.

"I do not have an estimation on the contribution of Muslim fashion at the moment, but I predict it is around 3 percent," she said, adding that the contribution of the fashion sector in the creative economy industry was 28 percent in 2013.

In addition, in a bid to make Indonesia Asia's fashion hub in 2018, the government has implemented a number of concrete actions to develop fashion talents under the Indonesia Fashion Forward programs.

"We are helping our talented young designers develop better collections so they can face competition in the market. We are also preparing them for Jakarta Fashion Week," she continued. (nfo)
