Mekong Summit: Joint effort sought to make best use of resources

The Mekong River Commission (MRC) senior officials meeting in Hua Hin, central Thailand, has called upon nations along Mekong River to boost co-operation in sharing information to develop the river's natural resources, reported Vietnam News Agency.

At their discussions on the weekend, participants stressed lack of full co-operation in developing the Mekong River 's natural resources and called on nations along the river to seek measures to both tap it's economic benefits and prevent negative impacts on society and the environment.

Thai Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suwit Khunkitti said China's provision of hydrological data to the MRC would contribute to improve co-operation between countries along the Mekong and China.

China would closely work with those Mekong countries to solve current drought, said Chen Mingzhou, Deputy Head of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology's International Co-operation Department.

Solutions suggested by the senior officials will be submitted to the MRC Summit scheduled for today and tomorow in Hua Hin with participation of the prime ministers of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Viet Nam, and representatives from China as observer.
