THE DRAGON EMERGES
China is poised to become the next world superpower. It is already the second largest economy in the world and being in this preeminent position, China finds itself in an awkward situation. The United States is now engaging China in a way that shows it recognizes China’s arrival on the world stage. From human rights to the renminbi revaluation to regional politics, it seems that the U.S. is making its voice heard on China’s moves. The world as we know it is changing.

FLIGHT OF FANCY AND FIREPOWER

China’s strong military presence in the region has not only caught the attention of the U.S. but also its neighbours who are aware of the military build-up. China is now reasserting herself in the

dispute with Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines over territories in the South China Sea. It was not too long ago that an economically weak China was invaded by Japan and exploited by France, Germany, Great Britain, and Russia.

ENGAGEMENT AND RESPONSIBILITY

For a start, China needs to engage its neighbours at the human level. China has been taking active steps to participate in humanitarian projects involving the military and medical units. In the recent heavy floods in Pakistan in July this year, the People’s Liberation Army of China provided the Pakistani military with tents, power generation and sludge clearing equipment. They have also participated in various peacekeeping assignments under the auspices of the United Nations.

Politically, China is already asserting its dominance in the region. In recent years, Chinese leaders have made many visits to strengthen ties with its Asian neighbours such as India, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore. China is fast replacing the U.S. as the dominant Big Brother in this region. The subtleties are poignant and at the same...............
