HRH Prince Mohamed on meeting MDG goals on natural environment
At the High-Level Plenary Meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that the lack of highly skilled people in the country meant that Brunei cannot implement recommendations, even though they are satisfied with the information they get.
"This is particularly the case with the natural environment in general, and specifically biodiversity."
"Even though we have signed key international agreements, we have a very real problem. It can be summed up quite simply. We don't know enough," His Royal Highness said.
His Royal Highness said that some of the MDGs will be "very hard" for Brunei to achieve.
"We can even provide much of the physical infrastructure, but there is very little else we can do if we don't have enough highly skilled people," His Royal Highness said.
HRH added that the lack of human resources would always be a "big problem" due to the Sultanate's small population and domestic market.
The minister further said that statistics on the natural environment often contradicted each other and basic facts were frequently disputed.
