Asia-Pacific Weeks Berlin

Objective

With the Asia-Pacific Weeks (APW), Berlin focuses every two years on a region holding huge potential for the future, ranging from Pakistan in the west and Mongolia in the north to Japan in the east and the Pacific Islands in the south. More than 300 events on business, science, culture, and society attract attention and arouse curiosity, pass on information, and facilitate contacts and concrete cooperation between different players and institutions. The federal government and federal ministries, embassies, business associations of the federal state of Berlin, companies, national associations and corporate offices, museums, galleries and theaters, Goethe Institutes and Asian cultural institutions, universities and research institutions, foundations, non-governmental organizations, and registered associations contribute to the Asia-Pacific Weeks by supporting or organizing events. The Asia-Pacific Weeks pool, connect, and showcase the expertise available in Berlin on the Asian-Pacific region, and in doing so raise the city’s profile both in Germany and abroad as a venue for dialogue with this region – as a “gateway to Asia-Pacific.”

Structure

The Asia-Pacific Weeks were founded on the initiative of the Governing Mayor of Berlin and are held every two years. The Governing Mayor receives support from two
strategic partners: Berlin Partner GmbH, together with Asia-Pacific Forum Berlin, as coordinator of the business and science program, and the House of World Cultures, as coordinator of the cultural program. A steering committee chaired by the Head of the Senate Chancellery makes policy decisions on implementing and promoting the APW programs. As members of the Advisory Board, federal ministers and heads of relevant business and cultural institutions support the Governing Mayor’s initiative.

Concept

A unique feature contributing to the success of the Asia-Pacific Weeks is the combination of a vast range of events and stakeholders from business, culture, and science. Another special aspect is the organizational principle of the “public-privatepartnership” concluded between the federal state of Berlin and the organizers of the individual events of the Asia-Pacific Weeks: Berlin provides only the official framework and manages coordination and promotion for the project as a whole. Both public and private companies and Asian-Pacific and German institutions then use this forum for the events they organize and fund themselves.

Development

The Asia-Pacific Weeks were held for the first time in 1997. From 1999 to 2005, each APW focused on a different country; starting in 2007, the APW took a thematic focus. Under the heading “Asia-Pacific: Changing the World,” the 6th Asia-Pacific Weeks, which prioritized “Urban Infrastructure” and “Creative Industries,” investigated Asian- Pacific influence on Europe and vice versa in a world of global networks.

2009 Asia-Pacific Weeks

Under the heading “Asia-Pacific: Partner for a Common Future,” the 7th Asia-Pacific Weeks, which take place from 7 to 18 October 2009, will be focusing on the thematic
areas of “Mobility” and “Energy.” Within these key topics, the 2009 APW will be looking at common values, responsibilities, and areas in which there is need for action.

Progress, movement and transport, speed and the overcoming of distances are the main features of the focus on “Mobility.” Conferences, symposia, exhibitions, and
performances related to this topic will deal with both physical movement and the social and cultural prerequisites, achievements, and consequences of mobility. The
events organized around the “Energy” theme will concentrate on issues like environmentally friendly energy generation, the efficient use of energy, and sustainability in connection with environmental and health policy perspectives.
