Wall St Falls Will Pressure ASEAN Markets

A savage downturn on Wall St overnight will pressure stocks around ASEAN today with the exception of Thailand that will be riding high on an end to a lengthy political impasse.

Thailand’s SET Index advanced 4.5 percent, the most in two weeks and the baht strengthened the most since March, after Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva reached an agreement to end the Bangkok Crisis.

PTT at 269.00 baht, up by 12.00 or 4.67 per cent.

PTTEP at 157.50 baht, up by 5.50 or 3.62 per cent.

SCB at 88.50 baht, up by 6.50 or 7.93 per cent.

National carrier Thai Airways surged 6.6 percent and hotelier Erawan Group, which runs the Grand Hyatt Erawan in the main protest area, gained 7.4 percent.

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship has resolved to join Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva’s roadmap for reconciliation, Veera Musikhapong said after a meeting of UDD leaders on Tuesday.

The market was closed on Monday and is closed for another holiday on Wednesday.

Jakarta, Asia’s second best performing market this year, edged down 0.06 percent, with Astra International (ASII) and Telkom Indonesia (TLKM) each down almost 2 percent.

Malaysia was down 0.3 percent, with casino operator Genting (GENT) off nearly 3 percent amid concern its Malaysian operations may come under pressure following the opening of a new casino in Singapore last month.

Singapore fell 1.5 percent, as investors took profits in banking stocks even though they were expected to report positive quarterly results this week. DBS Group (DBSM) fell 1.6 percent, Oversea-Chinese Banking Corp (OCBC) lost 1.9 percent and United Overseas Bank (UOBH) was off 2.1 percent.

The Philippines edged up 0.02 percent and Vietnam climbed 1.2 percent after a holiday.

In Manila, Globe Telecom (GLO) fell 0.5 percent before the the Philippines’ second-biggest telecommunications firm reported a 26 percent fall in first-quarter net profit after the market closed.
